Why Develop Correct Spelling?

Here are some of the advantages of correct English spelling. . .

1. Correct spelling is the only means of 'mapping' speech to standard book print for reading.
2. Correct spelling is the basis of accurate and fluent reading with comprehension.
3. Correct spelling encourages early, creative composition, which frees the mind for reasoning
and allows the scholar to concentrate on the content of the message.
4. Correct spelling eases a student's way into all of the "strands" of English because it is the only
accurate basis for those strands.

Will This Camp Cure my Child's Spelling Problem?

You and your child will be amazed at what can happen in 4 weeks!
This camp will help enormously by teaching the commonly used English spelling patterns, cleaning up letter formation, and learning the spelling process of about 150 basic words. This will give your child a solid foundation upon which to continue learning.

What Might the Results Be?

When this camp was offered to homeschoolers in Westfield, MA, 22 campers' average gain in assessment scores was one full grade level in under 60 hours of camp. Two middle school boys achieved an improvement of over 3 grade levels, while the smallest increment was 6 months (severe ADHD challenge.)

Mrs. Oma Riggs, co-founder of the Riggs Institute, used this method her whole teaching career; she claimed that there was only one student who was unable to learn from this method. She also reminded us that she was always brought the most severely challenged children to work
with!

What Parents Say about English Language Detective Camp:

"Yesterday during our 15 minute reading time, suddenly, she was reading like some other child! Something is definitely clicking in the oral reading confidence department. For the first time, I could truly praise her for excellent reading. I'm thrilled and so is she." Ruth, Agawam, MA

"Great program the way you have it with fun and learning." Lynn, W. Springfield, MA

"My son has been blessed by Mrs. Heady's dedication to the program and her students... Not just I but his father has noticed an incredible improvement. The program, to me, is priceless and your methods of teaching more so." Yolanda, Chicopee, MA

"The clues you gave helped L. figure out things better, even with her dyslexia... I definitely see improvement in all of my kids." Maryanne, Holyoke, MA

All three children are finding spelling easier than before... J's handwriting is neat for the first time... Lately, they have been writing letters to their friend for fun... they have been improving in following directions... J has been struggling for so long, it's great to see him finally getting it... We still have a long way to go but ... the children feel comfortable in your classes and have learned a lot." Pat, Westfield, MA

What Parents Are Saying about the Riggs Method:

"My child was frustrated with school and would call himself stupid. Now, thanks to Riggs, he knows he can succeed." Debra, Beaverton, OR

"We have observed a radical improvement in our son's handwriting, spelling, reading, and academic self confidence. The Riggs method is a no-nonsense systematic approach to literacy." Mark, Portland, OR

"My son was behind his peers; it was affecting his behavior. Now, thanks to Riggs, he is more confident, does his homework, and has a better attitude." Cindy

"The program includes the use of all learning styles. It has dramatic impact on the learner." Danae Miller, Aloha, OR

"Within two weeks, Austin's letter formation improved dramatically and his 'dyslexia' had all but disappeared. Over the next six months his improvement was steady. It wasn't until we started the Riggs program and taught him the phonograms and spelling rules that he made any real progress." K. M., Portland, OR

"The multi-sensory and logical approach really appealed to my child, who is strong in math, but very weak in reading and spelling." Cathy, Portland, OR

"If you've lost all hope and are sick of the labels, go to Riggs." Peggy Haskins, Portland, OR
"Riggs has proven to be the most effective spelling and reading program we have tried." Tammarie, Portland, OR
